Seek out the essence of rural Italy, in this bucolic region

With rolling hills, sleepy villages, picturesque coastline and fascinating towns and cities, luxury holidays in Tuscany are all about enjoying the slow-paced way of life. As well as lovely landscapes, the region’s capital, Florence, is famed for its Renaissance and medieval architecture. You can see all of this and more with one of our indulgent holidays, which offer everything from indulgent stays in 5 star hotels in Tuscany to hot air balloon rides, leisurely cycle rides and vineyard tours.

Perfect landscapes

Tuscany is synonymous with gentle sloping hills, olive groves and vineyards. However, the region is also home to the imposing Apennine Mountains in the north, as well as idyllic islands and beautiful beaches in the south.

For those who like to stay active while on holiday, the region’s countryside is ideal for cycling and hiking. Alternatively, hire an Italian open-topped car to explore the diverse landscapes in style.

The cities

Tuscan cities are celebrated for their Renaissance architecture and association with great artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Florence is one of Italy’s most visited cities and contains the iconic Duomo - a cathedral with a red-tiled cupola. Another of the city’s most significant buildings is the Palazzo Vecchio, which was built between 1298 and 1314 and overlooks the Piazza della Signoria. Florence also has a selection of fascinating galleries and museums which house some of the world’s greatest works of art.

In Siena, Piazza del Campo is considered to be one of Europe’s most well-preserved medieval squares. Built on the site of a Roman marketplace, it’s a place where tourists and locals congregate to relax on the sun-kissed square. Meanwhile, the Leaning Tower of Pisa has made its home city world famous and is well worth a look. As well as the notorious tilting tower, Pisa has a variety of other landmarks including the beautiful Piazza dei Miracoli, the cathedral and the Clock Palace.

Eating and drinking

Tuscany offers a variety of dining options, from fine dining restaurants to traditional, family-owned tavernas and trattorias.

The region produces an abundance of mouth-watering fresh food, including cheese, fish, salami and olive oil - all of which feature heavily on the menus. The cities also have their own specialities. In Florence, for example, popular dishes include tripe and offal, as well as T-bone steaks and pasta ribbons served with wild boar or hare sauce.

Siena is known for pica, which is pasta made without eggs. For those with a sweet tooth, don’t miss the chance to try panforte - a spicy cake made with nuts and candied fruits.

A region known for its vineyards, no trip to Tuscany is complete without trying some of the high quality wine, including the famous Chianti.
