Fully preserved, the small hill town of Urbino is one of the most important centres of the Italian Renaissance, attracting artists and scholars for centuries. Today the stunning architecture is displayed in historic buildings including the Ducal Palace and Albornoz Fortress. The duke of Urbino from 1444 to 1482, Federico da Montefeltro, spearheaded the creation of the city seen today. The famed painter and architect Raphael was also born here with the house being turned into a museum.
