Venice Luxury Holidays

The City of Bridges

Explore the canals and islands of this Italian cultural behemoth

There are few places in the world as iconic as Venice

Venice is undoubtedly one of the most romantic and beguiling places in the world. Water is of course its dominant feature, with 100 canals and 400 bridges linking the islands on which the city is built. A culture-lover’s paradise, it has numerous historical monuments, museums, churches and art galleries. Our 5 star hotels in Venice are the ideal base from which to explore this elegant city.

The Orient Express

One of the best ways to start luxury holidays in Venice is with a trip on the Orient Express from London, made famous by the Agatha Christie novel. The art deco interior of the carriages will transport you back to a more glamorous, bygone era and ensure that you arrive in style.

Eating and drinking in Venice

The garden islands and aquaculture of the area surrounding Venice means that there’s an abundance of fresh fish and vegetables served throughout the city. Dine in one of the canalside bistros and enjoy lavish seafood banquets and traditional pasta dishes with lovely views of the water. If you’re looking for a snack, the city has many eateries serving various cicheti dishes, which are similar to Spanish tapas. Accompany your meal with a glass of sparkling prosecco - the city’s favourite alcoholic beverage.

The art of Venice

To see some of the world’s best art and architecture, head to the famous central square, Piazza San Marco. Here, you can marvel at the great St. Mark’s Basilica and head up the bell tower for fantastic views across the city. The sun-kissed square also houses a variety of restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy a refreshing drink or bite to eat and spend the afternoon people-watching.

Away from the busy Piazza San Marco, there are many other treasures to see. Art-lovers should head to the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni to see the huge painting by Carpaccio of St. George and the Dragon. More fine art can be seen in the Church of Madonna dell’Orto, which houses celebrated paintings such as Cima’s Saint John the Baptist with Other Saints.

The Academia is perhaps the best museum in Venice and is home to Bellini’s San Giobbe altarpiece.

Gondolas and boats

With no roads, the only way to get around Venice is by boat. A ride in a gondola can be a romantic experience for couples, but it also offers a charming way to see the sights of the city. There are also public ferries and taxi boats that transport passengers to various destinations.

If you fancy a change of scenery, hop on board a yacht which will take you to the nearby lagoons and islands. You can even stay on the boat overnight if you want more time to explore.
