Antigua

Antigua

Where the beach is just the beginning

Quintessential Caribbean flavour

One of the Caribbean’s most idyllic islands, luxury holidays to Antigua offer visitors a unique combination of world-class beaches, rich heritage and quintessential Caribbean flavour.

You’ll be swept away by the island’s beauty as pastel-coloured houses vie for attention alongside coffee plantations, scenic harbours, historical forts and lush rainforests.

Island highlights

With so much to see and do, you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice on a holiday to Antigua. Hike along Galleon Beach or hop on board a boat to admire the mighty rock formation known as the Pillars of Hercules, which stand guard over the entrance to the English Harbour. Don’t miss the chance to explore Nelson’s Dockyard, named after the famous admiral, which has been in operation since 1745 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

To learn more about the island’s fascinating history, trek up to the restored garrison and fort at Shirley Heights, where you can also enjoy the panoramic views across the harbour. Sunday afternoons at Shirley Heights is not to be missed as locals and tourists alike flock here to enjoy BBQ food a rum punch or two and dance to local musicians whilst watching the stunning sunset.

Life’s a beach

With dozens of isolated coves and hidden sandy beaches, it’s no wonder Antigua is famous for its enchanting coastline. The crescent shaped Half Moon Bay is a twin delight - the calm waters in the south end of the beach are perfect for snorkelling, while bodysurfers can enjoy the lively breakers on the north side. Another must-visit beach is Rendezvous Bay, which takes you on a charming walk through the rainforest and opens out onto pristine white sands and turquoise waters. For something a bit more upbeat, Dickenson Bay offers a typical Caribbean beach lined with busting bars, cabanas and watersport centres.

Adventure

No holiday to Antigua would be complete without a coastal tour, either by 4x4 or by boat. If you want to explore the exotic marine life beneath the waves, make sure you bring your snorkel and stop off at Cades Reef - the island’s largest reef. Adrenaline-seekers also won’t want to miss the chance to take part in one of the island’s thrilling yacht races, whether it’s a hands-on role or simply as a passenger. If you prefer land-based activities, Antigua offers plenty of rainforest tours and adventures, where you can soar through the canopies on a zipline, brave the suspension bridges and tackle high-rope challenges.

Antiguan flavor

What better way to end your day than with a cool Wadadli beer from the Antigua Brewery, or a spicy rum punch made from locally-produced ingredients. Pull up a seat at one of the lively beach bars and watch the sunset across the glittering ocean.

When it comes to eating out, there’s a wide variety of choice on offer. You’ll find everything from fine-dining in 5 star Antigua hotels to local restaurants serving traditional island dishes such as Pepperpot, a hearty stew. BBQs on the beach are also a popular evening activity on the island, usually accompanied by the heady sound of reggae music thumping in the background and limbo dancers wowing the crowds.
