With a vast range of scenery brimming with natural beauty, Croatia and Montenegro are underemphasized and up-and-coming destinations for a truly fantastic holiday. Whether you dream of relaxing on pristine beaches or hiking up mountains, Croatia and Montenegro have plenty to offer

Adriatic wonders

Both of these former Yugoslavian nations boast world class National Parks, perfect to get your fill of outdoor adventure and stunning views. Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes National Park, featuring 16 lakes linked by cascading waterfalls, can be explored on foot using the many pathways and bridges that create a perfect opportunity to take in the views of the crystal clear mineral-rich water. If you know you’d be tempted to swim, Krka National Park would be a great place to visit, as its lakes and waterfalls are just as beautiful and visitors can take a dip in the emerald water. In Montenegro, Durmitor National Park holds plenty of potential for exploration. The Durmitor mountain range makes for impressive views, dotted with tranquil lakes known as ‘mountain eyes’.

The region’s picturesque coastlines are another reason why tourists flock to Croatia and Montenegro. From the mainland, which itself offers plenty of serene beaches, visitors can take ferries to a multitude of glittering pine-covered islands surrounded by pristine cobalt sea. If it’s an untouched paradise you’re looking for, Mljet is a perfect choice, with dense forests, lakes, deserted bays and sleepy villages. The island of Hvar is another popular destination, with no shortage of natural wonder. Hvar town is a must-visit for those who enjoy nightlife; there is something for every taste, from upmarket cocktail bars to laid-back beach parties.

Split, a vibrant port city that is one of Croatia’s most popular, is another fantastic place to sample the nightlife the country has to offer. With numerous bars and restaurants lining its narrow streets, there is plenty to keep visitors busy.

City life

Croatia and Montenegro are also home to plenty of bustling cities packed with history, interesting architecture and impressive sights. Diocletian’s Palace, which is more of a walled town, has Roman origins but also features Gothic and Baroque architecture. Though busy during the day, it becomes a very romantic spot once the sun sets.

Similarly, the walled Old Town of Dubrovnik is captivating and unique, no matter how many times you have seen it. On the coast of the beautiful Adriatic, a walk around the city walls provides fantastic views and an insight into the city’s history.

Moving on to Montenegro, Stari Bar, an ancient ruined city that is almost three thousand years old, is another impressive site to explore. Take a few hours to wander the ruins of this fortress settlement, learning about its history and enjoying views of the surrounding landscape. Monasteries, like that on the island of Mljet, and churches, such as those in Herceg Novi’s old town, are also interesting opportunities to soak up some history and culture.
