Asia in Slow Motion

Enjoy a gentle way of life

Discover a corner of South East Asia, less touched by travel than its more famous neighbours

A corner of Asia that remains relatively untouched by tourism, Laos is a stunning combination of landscapes with a tragic history and dynamic culture.

Timeless beauty

Outstandingly beautiful and quintessential of Laos, Luang Prabang has something for every traveller. Surrounded by mountains, rivers and waterfalls, there are ample opportunities for trekking, mountain biking, kayaking and boat trips. Boutique hotels, fantastic cuisine and luxurious spas will keep visitors relaxed and comfortable, while temples, traditional villas and processions of monks at sunrise will provide a dose of culture and history.

Si Phan Don, an awe-inspiring archipelago of islands famed for their tranquil beauty, tempts in many travellers with its rural, off-the-beaten-track allure. Laos is a landlocked country, but these islands are found in the vast Mekong river. Visitors can marvel at the Khon Phapheng Falls, the largest on the island, where gardens and walking paths make an attractive site. Trekking to the Khon Pa Soi Falls provides a more exclusive experience; the long trek means the site is usually quieter, and the trek, including a rickety bridge crossing, adds to the sense of adventure. Visitors to the Si Phan Don islands must also sample the local cuisine; plenty of fresh, home grown vegetables and locally caught seafood dominate the menus.

Landscapes and sites to explore

Terraced rice paddies and lush forests are another aspect of the kaleidoscope of landscapes not to be missed in Laos. Sticky rice, a staple food here, is grown on these picturesque green expanses with the help of huge buffalo to pull the ploughs. Set among these verdant surroundings is the Wat Phu World Heritage Area, home to the impressive Khmer ruins nestled on the mountainside. This religious site features promenades, pavilions and courtyards, complete with ornate statues and carvings, notably the unique ‘elephant stone’ and ‘crocodile stone’. These magnificent ruins combined with the dramatic location make for a truly mystical experience.

Action and adventure

For those seeking an adrenaline boost during their trip to Laos, Vang Vieng is somewhere not to be missed. Surrounded by idyllic vistas starring imposing cliffs, luscious fields and the glittering Nam Song river, the area is packed with potential for activities. Climbing, zip-lining and tubing on the river are just some of the pursuits on offer, while cycling is a great way to explore the area at your own speed.

Across Laos, zip-lining is a popular pastime for daredevils and thrillseekers. Fly through dense jungle canopies in the Nam Kan NPA amongst a myriad of wildlife, or over a stunning Mekong waterfall.

A laid-back capital

Vientiane is a charming city on the banks of the Mekong river, home to an eclectic mix of people and cultures. This slow-paced city is definitely somewhere to relax. Sample vibrant offerings from the many street vendors or fine cuisine from the city’s restaurants, then try some yoga or leisurely cycling to unwind even more.
