Cote d'Azur

Ever since artists were inspired by the beauty of the landscape and a light that, according to Matisse, is “soft and tender despite its brilliance”, people have been drawn to the south east corner.

The French, southern side of Lake Geneva, or Lac Léman as the French say, boasts some of the most stunning scenery in Europe, if not the world.

Famed for its rich culture, outstanding cuisine, and sophisticated reputation, it is no wonder that France remains one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. From its picture-perfect cobbled villages to its vibrant and dynamic city centres, luxury holidays in France effortlessly combine breathtaking architecture, riveting history, world famous art museums, and stunning landscapes; be they mountains, beaches, or forests.

A taste of romance

It is often said that France’s capital, Paris, is one of the most romantic cities in the world. Spending an afternoon in the Artists Quarter sipping ‘chocolat chaud’ in a little café under the shadow of the iconic Sacré Coeur church, it is not hard to understand why.

At weekends, one can often see visitors and locals walking along the Seine, stopping at the flea markets which lounge the banks to pick up some antiques and curios. No visit to Paris is complete without a trip up the Eiffel Tower to overlook the symmetry of the Haussmann boulevards, or without coming face-to-face with the Mona Lisa herself at the Louvre museum.

A taste of folklore

The former abbey of Mont St Michel – one of the most recognisable of France’s landmarks – rises out of the sea like an island floating on water. Further south, Brittany, from which Great Britain takes its name, is a holiday favourite with tourists and the French alike. Its enchanting Brocéliande forest is supposedly the birthplace of the legendary King Arthur of the round table. The trees in this forest are centuries-old. Guided walks take you to the tomb of Merlin the Wizard. The Château de Comper stands on the bank of the lake and tales of Arthurian magic and adventure are told over flagons of cider and local crepes.

A taste of fiesta

Further south, the summer portends long hot days languishing by the pool, seaside, or lakeside. A number of southern towns have traditional fetes in the summer where drinking, dancing, and singing the streets for days on end are to be expected.

To the south east, you have the gateway to Spain, the dramatic Atlantic coast and impressive ski resorts in the Pyrenees. To the south west, the world-famous Nice and Cannes attract more affluent crowds looking to splurge in high-end designer boutiques and to lounge on impeccably maintained beaches. The Mediterranean waters are calm, warm, and perfectly accompany an artisanal ice-cream, or a long, cool gin and tonic.

A taste of aristocracy

It is well known that the French revolted against their royal family and their associated entourage. The gentry may be gone, but their idyllic chateaux remain. Many have now been revamped into exquisite boutique hotels, featuring vast rooms, well-appointed furnishings, perfectly manicured gardens, and sumptuous spas. For those who fancy a bit of adventure, why not stay on a private yacht on the Cote d’Azure? For those who love the buzz of the city, reclaimed palaces in historic cities like Paris, Lyon, and Marseille await. All of this diversity points to why luxury holidays in France are more popular than ever. You are sure to find just the sort of holiday vibe that suits you.
