Cities and sites

With its two distinct parts – the traditional Medina and the trendy Ville Nouvelle – Marrakech offers the best of both worlds. In the centre, you’ll find the open area known as the Jemaa el-Fnaa, where locals and tourists alike gather in the evenings to watch a range of entertainment, including musicians, acrobats and dancers. Wander through the winding souks in the north, which have a huge variety of goods on offer, and be sure to taste the city’s famous tanjia stew. Don’t miss the chance to visit the stunning Koutoubia Minaret with its classic Moroccan architecture, as well as the Saadian Tombs and the ancient El Badi Palace.

Further north is Fez, a medieval city overflowing with ancient monuments and architectural wonders. Some of the city’s most prominent landmarks include the Kairaouine Mosque and the Medersa Bou Inania. Take the time to explore the souks that weave through Fez el Bali, before treating yourself to an authentic hammam experience or a sumptuous spa session.

Two more European-style cities are Rabat, the capital, and Casablanca, the country’s biggest city. Both exude a distinctly modern air and won’t disappoint with their dining and shopping scenes, not to mention the range of 5 star Moroccan hotels on offer. Each city has its own impressive architecture and monuments, including the Hassan Mosque and Tower and ruins of Chellah in Rabat, as well as the awe-inspiring Mosquee Hassan II in Casablanca.

Beaches and mountains

The High Atlas mountain range harbours some glorious scenery, whether you choose to explore them by mule, mountain bike or on foot. The village of Oukaimeden is home to some fascinating prehistoric rock carvings and, during the winter season, offers exhilarating skiing opportunities. Challenge yourself to climb Toubkal, the highest peak of the High Atlas, rising a dizzying 4,167 metres. The dramatic and remote Rif Mountains in the far north form a natural boundary between Africa and Europe, while volcanic lakes and canyons can be found across the forested Middle Atlas mountain range.

With both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines, Morocco offers some fabulous beaches. Popular spots include the pristine Saidia beach and Legzira Plage, with its towering limestone arches, as well as Agadir in the south, which is home to a sweeping beach dotted with seafront cafés. Head to Essaouira for fabulous windsurfing or to Taghazout for the best of Morocco’s surfing.

For a different side of nature, visit the lush palm gorge of Paradise Valley from where you can hike up to the breathtaking Immouzer des Ida Outanane waterfalls.
