Pacific Northwest Luxury Holidays

Where Big Cities Meet The Wilderness

A haven of food, music and nature

Discover fascinating cities known for their music and art before venturing out into untamed wilderness

The Pacific Northwest states of Washington and Oregon boast natural splendour, fantastic food, unique microbreweries and a buzzing music and art scene. With such a broad range of reasons to visit, the region has something to tempt every traveller.

City living

The innovative and ever-changing Seattle is a patchwork of neighbourhoods, each with its own personality, that combine perfectly to form a diverse and vibrant city. While touring the numerous coffee houses, bookshops, craft cider makers and microbreweries (complete with their own tasting rooms), visitors gain an insight into the city’s many budding grassroots businesses.

An absolute must-visit, the famous waterside Pike Place Market is a diverse tapestry of people and produce, and a truly unique local experience. Spot the huge neon sign that has existed there for almost a hundred years, along with a giant piggy bank that collects funds for the market social services. A trip to Seattle is never complete without visiting the observation deck of the iconic Space Needle, an extraordinary, futuristic building offering panoramic views over Washington’s biggest city.

Venturing south to Oregon, Portland is friendly, welcoming city home to an eclectic mix of people, and somewhere that celebrates individuality, creativity, and anything a bit unusual. Known for its progressive, environmentally friendly approach, Portland cultivates an eco-conscious culture, with 30% of the city dedicated to leafy parks and green spaces.

The city is also a haven for foodies, featuring everything from high-end restaurants to its famous food carts, offering endless choices of very affordable local and international cuisine. With a bounty of fresh ingredients arriving from the nearby fertile valleys and Pacific Ocean, coupled with world-class chefs, Portland’s culinary delights are deserving of their glowing reputation. Combining this with an abundance of unique craft breweries and independent coffee shops, Portland provides the perfect place to eat and drink your way around.

The nature beyond

Even while visiting the region’s cities, it’s impossible to forget the stunning natural world on their doorsteps, with Mt Rainier and Mt Hood ever visible from Seattle and Portland, respectively. Mt Rainier, an active volcano, is a huge snowy peak at the centre of a stunning national park, and Mt Hood, Oregon’s highest peak, offers spectacular hiking or skiing depending on the time of year.

Beyond the urban, lush green vistas are waiting to be discovered. For the active and adventurous, the region’s epic landscapes have even more to offer. Camping or hiking through the wild are exciting ways to get close to nature, perhaps in the wondrous Columbia River Gorge that divides Washington and Oregon, or Crater Lake National Park, with mystical forests and its serene turquoise lake with impossibly clear water. Try skiing or snowboarding to explore the mountains, or watersports, including white-water rafting, kayaking and kiteboarding, to make use of the region’s plentiful lakes and rivers. On the coast, at Washington’s Puget Sound, boat trips take visitors to spot pods of orcas hunting for salmon, or if you’d rather stay on dry land, try to catch a glimpse from Lime Kiln Point State Park.
