The UK Government has recently announced it plans to introduce a traffic light system upon the resumption of international travel.  The planned date for this was previously set at 17 May 2021 but this has not yet been confirmed. Current government indications appear to suggest that we will not have any confirmation of travel restrictions until the beginning of May, along with details of which country sits in each colour-based list.

The way the proposed system is expected to work is along the following lines:

  • Green: There will be no quarantine requirement on returning to the UK, but travellers must take a pre-departure test, as well as a PCR test on return to the UK

  • Amber: Travellers will need to quarantine for 10 days upon returning to the UK, as well as taking a pre-departure test and two PCR tests

  • Red:Travellers will be required to pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as a pre-departure test and two PCR tests

What does that mean for my holiday?

Firstly, it is important to bear in mind that these guidelines are for when travel starts up again, which we hope will be in May.  The Government has already indicated that these will be reviewed again no later than 28 June, so it is worth considering that if you are planning to travel in August for example, these rules may have changed or not be in place at al byt that time.  We will not be able to advise you on any requirements this far ahead.

For now, subject to further clarification and updates from the Government and only for customers due to travel up to 31 May 2021:

Green: Holidays will go ahead as planned. You will need to ensure you comply with the Government requirements and those in place at your destination at the time you travel.

Amber: Again, holidays will go ahead as planned. Clients do not have the right to cancel their holiday and receive a full refund due to the need to quarantine on return.   The quarantine requirement does not affect the actual holiday, therefore there is still a responsibility to pay the suppliers (accommodation, flights, etc.) for their services.

You may wish to consider changing the dates of you holiday to a later time if you are unable to quarantine at home. This is something we are more than happy to investigate for you and to help you consider your options, you will need to bear in mind however that there may be costs to do this.  These include, but are not limited to:

  • Cancellation and amendment fees levied by suppliers to change your accommodation and transport arrangements.

  • Differences in flight costs plus any admin fees charged by the airline.

  • Increases in accommodation costs – this can happen if the dates you select are in peak travel periods for example.

Red: If any of our destinations fall into the Red category, if you decide that you do not want to travel then you can either choose to rebook your holiday to a later date or you can cancel. Some elements of the holiday may be non-refundable; we will discuss this with you at the time.

At this stage, we are only working on bookings who are due to travel up to 31 May 2021.  We will continue to monitor the situation and will provide an update on the situation as and when guidelines change.
