| Spice Island Beach Resort certainly lives up to its enviable setting on mile-long Grand Anse beach. Yes, it has long qualified as one of the Caribbean’s most popular resorts, but last winter it re-opened as a truly upscale getaway following a ten-million dollar facelift masterminded by famed US architect, Kobi Karp.
The spacious all-suite accommodation features rooms set directly on the white sands or just behind in the tropical gardens. Appointed in a chic contemporary style enhanced by an attractive ‘spice’ colour scheme, they feature anything from flat-screen TVs and fine Italian linens to double whirlpool tubs and private terraces or balconies. The much-loved Pool Suites have also been taken up a notch or two, some boasting their own private plunge pools,
others offering saunas and residential-size swimming pools. The new Cinnamon and Saffron Suites are a great success thanks to their water’s edge setting, floating canopy beds and marble and glass bathrooms.
Despite these refinements, ‘Spice’ is still all about rest and relaxation, the long list of sporting opportunities only therefor when guests can summon up the energy to drag themselves away from the beach loungers. Recreational facilitiesinclude an oceanfront swimming pool and non-motorised water sports, as well as a dive centre, tennis court, fitness room and complimentary green fees on the nearby 9-hole course. The 5,000 sq.ft. Janissa’s Spa combines with the ‘Nutmeg Pod’ children’s activity centre to ensure all age groups are satisfied.
Spice Island’s traditional focus upon personal service also remains unchanged, the high-profile role Sir Royston Hopkin and his family continue to play ensuring a particularly warm Caribbean welcome. This potent sense of the West Indies also extends to the culinary experience one can expect and, whether it’s a casual lunch at Sea & Surf or a romantic dinner in Oliver’s, dining is always a breeze-cooled oceanfront affair. Executive Chef Mark Banthorpefollows the Hopkin family’s culinary tradition and takes full advantage of local products and hotel-grown spices to prepare specialities such as Callaloo Tartlet and Local Grenadian Crab Back. Memorable evening events include Grenadian, Barbecue and Nostalgia nights.
