The flagship property of Six Senses Resorts & Spas, Soneva Fushi not only redefined the Maldives when it
first opened, but it also reinvented five-star resorts throughout the tropics. ‘Intelligent Luxury’ became a
concept synonymous with simple sophistication, exceptional service and indigenous design, and thirteen years later no one has come up with anything better.
It’s built on land rather than over water and carefully avoids anything that competes with the lush tropical
jungle that surrounds it. The beach-rimmed island of Kunfunadhoo takes about an hour to circuit on foot
and the wide choice of accommodation, as well as the use of rattan, thatch and natural fabrics, contribute to the feeling that this is a sprawling ethnic village, rather than a carefully-contrived resort.
All 65 rooms, suites and villas are secreted away amidst the jungle-like greenery, their timber furnishings
custom-designed, their bathrooms of the open-air garden variety and their outside sitting areas boasting
direct access to the beach. Many of the rooms have their own private pools and most also offer enticing spa suite options. Families will particularly enjoy the Soneva Fushi Villa Suite & Treehouse which comprises an expansive suite suitable for privacy-seeking adults, as well as an adjoining treehouse perfect for
accompanying children - the private pool will keep the youngsters entertained all day. A pool and treehouse with waterslide also await in the Jungle Reserve, whilst the two-bedroom Retreat is another option deserving special mention because of its generouslysized two-storey living area with pool and separate spa suite.
Days here are primarily geared towards watersports, suntanning and spa treatments. Windsurfing, sailing,
canoeing, tennis and cycling are all complimentary, with scuba-diving readily available at an additional cost, and if you fancy a soothing massage, body scrub or beauty treatment you only have to wander over to the Six Senses Spa.
And when it comes to dining, attention is not only paid to the calibre of the cuisine and wines, but also to the quality of the dining experience itself. The à la carte dinners of the main restaurant and east-meets-west cuisine of Me Dhuniye are suitably complemented by wine tastings, seaside barbecues, desert island picnics and candlelit dinners on private beaches. And let’s not forget the seafood tapas and premium vintages of the over-water Champagne Bar, nor the innovative ‘organic garden’ restaurant set high above the jungle on a tree-top platform. Don’t expect the old movies of the outdoor Cinema Paradiso to bring you back down to earth!
