Rosewood Mayakoba

In the Mayan language Mayakoba means ‘village of water’ which is a fair indication of what to expect at this upscale haven secreted away on the south-east coast of the Yucatan peninsula. Velvet lagoons, verdant jungle and pristine shoreline cover two-thirds of this 1,600-acre estate; the ultra-luxurious Rosewood development the second of four flagged properties to be built within the overall development.

The 128 guest suites can be found on small islands within Mayakoba’s network of crystal-clear lagoons, all boasting their own plunge pools, as well as private docks from which to catch the electric motorboats that transport you around the property. The low-slung contemporary buildings are of local limestone and woods, each individual room ranging from 800 to 3,700-square-feet in size and that’s not even taking into account the generous outdoor living space.

Locations range from beachfront to lagoonside, a handful also set over the water.

The full-service ‘Sense’ spa is also located on its own private island accessed by a bridge; facilities including a lap pool and meditation platform, as well as spa suites with plunge pools and rooftop sundecks.

Other leisure facilities including a mile-long beach, water sports, a fitness centre, yoga classes, three swimming pools and a Greg Norman-designed 18-hole championship golf course.

The four à la carte restaurants offer anything from healthy spa dishes and modern European cuisine to local specialities and seafood ceviches; resident tequila experts on hand to share their insights on this traditional Mexican beverage.
