Rattray’s may have replaced MalaMala’s legendary Harry’s Camp, but it still evokes
the same kind of colonial-inspired elegance. You can forget all about thatch and timber
here, the public areas more classically styled, their antiques set off by old photos and books, as well as plenty of ethnic accessories. Just 8 suites or khayas await here, each one a private hideaway complete with four-poster bed and spacious living area so welcoming that it could belong to a private home. The ‘his and hers’ bathrooms are distinguished by their clawfoot bathtubs, whilst the private decks boast anything from sun loungers for tanning to plunge pools for cooling down. Bush cuisine is served in the elegant dining room, although dining in the reed boma under the jackalberry tree is a definite highlight. And whilst there’s a pool, gymnasium and massages, the focus here is definitely on game-viewing - just as it has been for 40 years.
