Little Good Harbour is part of the north-west coast of Barbados, as opposed to simply on it. This 21-suite hotel has sprung up around the historical waterfront site of Fort Rupert in a tranquil fishing community and its 17th century origins contribute a charming sense of the past to its ultra-stylish ambience.
The original stone fort has been elegantly restored to house the public areas and two luxury Fort Suites. Other one and two-bedroom suites are housed in chattel house-style cottages in the gardens behind, whilst six 3-bedroom Vineyard Suites grace the hillside beyond. All of the accommodation is appointed with immaculate taste; the tropically inspired décor complemented by French doors leading out onto terraces or balconies overlooking the gardens.
Separate living rooms and fully-equipped kitchens are suggestive of tropical home-from-homes, although such is the popularity of the recently-extended Fish Pot restaurant that most guests eschew their private dining terraces in favour of waterfront tables for two.
Chef Stephen Belgrave prepares gourmet cuisine that makes the most of local seafood such as barracuda and shrimp, although it’s not unheard of for exotic delicacies like grilled Atlantic shark and fried goujons of alligator to
make appearances on the menu. Beach access is easy and water sports are nearby if you want them, but Little Good Harbour is probably best for couples or families simply looking for tasteful surroundings, personal service and, of course, great food.
