Everything Liz Biden touches turns to gold. Not only did this über-hotelier transform Birkenhead House and Royal Malewane into two of South Africa’s most sought-after boutique hotels, but she performed the same trick with her private country residence of
La Residence in the Cape Winelands. And whilst this much-loved 5-suite hideaway was generally considered a work of art by its discerning clientele, this year La Residence has been reborn, redesigned and even relocated!
It now stands 500 metres away from its original location on a private 30-acre wine and olive estate in the picture-perfect Franschhoek Valley. The brand new villa at its heart has been built in the same regal Tuscan style as its predecessor, yet this time it houses eleven ultra-luxurious suites, each one conceived by Liz’s masterly interior designer, Ralph Krall and each one boasting restful views over the vineyards, olive
orchards and lavender fields.
Yet just as it was before at La Residence the pace of life is deliciously slow, doing a lap of the courtyard swimming pool about as energetic as it ever gets. The cuisine, of course, is still sublime and can be enjoyed on the terrace or in the elegant dining room, the
management team of Len Straw, Edward Morton and Johan de Villiers still going that extra mile to make sure La Residence is your South African home-away-fromhome.
