| Whilst this vintage property was once a favourite of Sir Winston Churchill, nowadays it is more likely to feature in the travel plans of trend-setting celebrities. Yoga classes and spa treatments now complement the croquet matches and gentle sails around the bay, and whilst afternoon tea may well still be traditional, the nightlife is all about having
as much fun as possible. Indeed, it is this careful juxtaposition of the colonial and the contemporary that contributes towards Jamaica Inn’s exemplary reputation. That and, of course, the beach, which is widely regarded as Jamaica’s finest and just as suitable for swimming as it is for sunbathing - ‘just like a saltwater extension of the pool’ gushed one satisfied guest.
And nowhere is this setting better exploited than in the guest suites, their verandahs so spacious that they could easily be described as beachfront living rooms. Dining tables, antique furnishing and overstuffed sofas accentuate their residential feel, although those seeking the ultimate in privacy should perhaps opt for one of the ‘named’ suites.
The 2,000 sq.ft. White Suite sits on its own peninsula and boasts a secluded pool, whilst the Blue Cottage is a luxurious one-bedroom escape right on the sands. 2006 saw the addition of two one-bedroom suites located on a bluff overlooking the ocean. Chic, stylish and extremely private, they boast anything from four-poster beds and luxurious bathrooms to private infinity pools and expansive ocean-facing terraces.
Similarly high standards await on the alfresco dining terrace, the Executive Chef and his staff creating a distinctive fusion of Caribbean and Asian dishes using fresh local ingredients. The fine wines and attentive service combine with the after-dinner dancing and newly relaxed dress code (no jackets required!) to create suitably carefree evenings.
And for those who like to do more than just sunbathe and socialise, recreational facilities include a swimming pool, an exercise room and the KiYara Ocean Spa which offers open-air beauty treatments by the ocean. Non-motorised water sports are readily available from the beach and arrangements can easily be made for tennis, scuba-diving, water skiing, horse riding and golf on a nearby 18-hole course.
