Whilst Hunter’s Country House has been a hotel for just sixteen years, the main house at its heart is over a century-old. And as is fitting for an estate that used to be a private family home, plenty of traces of its past remain, including antique-furnished lounges and well-tended gardens. Little wonder it is a member of Relais & Châteaux.
Indeed, an old-world ambience permeates not only throughout the thatched manor house, but also the 21 cottages and suites. Nestled discreetly into the estate’s lush gardens, all of the rooms boast their own
private patios overlooking the forest, and are
individually appointed with antique furnishings and their own working fireplaces. Most also boast cosy thatched roofs. The traditional Orchard and Garden Cottages are complemented by slightly larger Premier
Suites and newly-converted Family Suites, although those seeking the finest accommodation should focus upon the spacious Classic Suites or one-of-a-kind
Forest Suite, all of which boast their own private plunge or swimming pools.
These same high standards apply to the cuisine one can expect here, the gourmet restaurant reputed to be amongst the top ten in South Africa and complemented by an impressive wine cellar. Of course, all the delights of the Garden Route are right
on the doorstep, Plettenberg Bay just 6 miles east, Knysna just 12 miles west and five golf courses within easy access. The on-site swimming pool and in-room spa treatments are always there when you return.
