It might be hidden away in a beautiful Cape valley, but The Grande Roche has received many international awards since opening in 1992. Yet its Relais Gourmands status is probably its most cherished accolade, testimony not only to its five-star hotel standards but also to the quality of its gourmet global cuisine. Indeed, Bosman’s Restaurant ranks amongst South Africa’s finest dining venues and is just one of the reasons to include this historic wine farm on your wish list.
At its hub lies the original T-shaped manor house, its surrounding vineyards and formal gardens dwarfed by the Grand Roche rock and distant mountains. Inside it is a heady celebration of both modern and traditional style, yet its cosy niches and odd-shaped doors reflect the Manor House’s original character. Also redolent of the past are the
hotel’s duplex suites, executive rooms and honeymoon suite, all housed in beautifully-restored outhouses that include the stables, wine cellar and slave quarters. Eight aptly-named Terrace Suites can be found in new buildings set on the manicured lawns.
General facilities include two swimming pools, floodlit tennis courts and the Kraal fitness area with massage room, whilst Paarl can be reached in just a few minutes on foot. Couples swept away by the sheer romance of it all can get married in the intimate stone chapel that was thought to have once served as the slave church.
