Long considered a leading light on Barbados’s west coast, The Fairmont Royal Pavilion continues to be a much-loved beach resort in touch with modern demands. The splashing fountains, hacienda-style architecture and lush eleven-acre gardens that made such an impact when the resort first opened over 20 years ago are now complemented by stylish interior designs that embrace the subtleties of the new millennium. The resort is accessed along an avenue of graceful coconut palms, its seventy-two guest rooms as close to the ocean as they can possibly get. Indeed, despite their re-styling it is still the views that are their most salient feature - nothing can quite beat stepping out onto your furnished terrace and seeing the Caribbean Sea spread out directly in front of you. Standard comforts include sitting areas with cable TVs, DVD/CD players and fully-stocked refreshment centres, as well as marble-floored bathrooms with both tubs and showers. Their balconies or terraces are a roomy 14 feet by 6 feet.

During the day, an informal low-key ambience generally prevails, most guests more than happy to relax around the swimming pool or upon the half-mile stretch of beach, perhaps indulging in some complimentary tennis, water sports or even a spot of afternoon tea. After dark, however, Royal Pavilion embraces a more refined ambience, the Moorish-style Palm Terrace restaurant a veritable vision in candlelight and marble right on the edge of the Caribbean Sea. International and local cuisine, as well as live entertainment are on the agenda here, with more casual Mediterranean specialities served at the poolside Café Taboras.
