This ‘Small Luxury Hotel of the World’ is simply brimming over with classic Caribbean charm. It was originally conceived in the fifties by Englishman Budge O’Hara, but today is run with equal panache by his wife Cynthia and their three offspring. Indeed it is Patrick, Mark and Karen who spearheaded the resort’s recent redevelopment programme, yet whilst decadent luxuries such as private plunge pools have gradually been introduced, the hotel’s original ambience of traditional luxury remains very much at the forefront.
The eighty-eight guest rooms are set amidst twelve-acres of beautifully landscaped gardens leading down to a coral sand west coast beach. Their individually-designed interiors include feather beds with crisp white Egyptian cotton bed linens and welcome comforts such as fridges and toasters; fresh flowers a special treat when you check-in. You can choose between rooms, cottages, junior suites, suites and even villas; private plunge pools a special feature of the newer Luxury Cottages; four poster beds and ultra-glamorous bathrooms distinguishing characteristics of the Luxury Plantation Suites. Private furnished balconies complete with fretwork and wooden balustrades overlook either the gardens, the swimming pools or the Caribbean Sea and off-shore coral reef.
Of course, some traditions never change and great emphasis continues to be placed upon dining at Coral Reef. Long-serving Executive Chef Graham Licorish heads a team with experience in some of the finest international
restaurants, his à la carte menus featuring classical adaptations, international fusions and West Indian dishes that go very well with the live entertainment.
And whilst guests usually need look no further than the beach, dive school, catamaran cruises and complimentary water sports to keep them entertained during the day, the two swimming pools, tennis courts, fitness room, nearbygolf courses and brand new spa (opening 15 December 2008) ensure plenty of land-based activities too.
