Calabash

As unassuming as Grenada itself, Calabash is hidden away amidst palm-studded lawns on the edge of yacht-strewn Prickley Bay. It is presided over by English owner Leo Garbutt and his General Manager Clive Barnes and whilst it is their commitment that ensures everything runs like clockwork behind the scenes, it is their warmth that establishes
the relaxed congenial ambience. Little touches like fresh fruit served on the beach each morning and canapés delivered to guest rooms each evening contribute to the aura of traditional charm that permeates throughout.

Just thirty suites form a horseshoe shape leading down to the beach, each one named after local spices, shrubs and flowers – Lady of the Night, Angel’s Trumpet and Prickley Pear are just some of the more evocative titles. The bedrooms and lounge areas are all pastel-coloured tributes to their tropical setting, whilst their balconies or terraces
offer restful views down across the lawns to the sea. All feature mini-bars, TVs, CD/DVD players and whirlpool bathtubs, whilst some also boast the added luxury of their own private plunge pools. Couples seeking total privacy, however, should probably go for the Thorneycroft Suite which is over 2,000-square-feet of luxury complete with a 22 ft. by 15 ft. swimming pool flanked by its own private sundeck.

Calabash’s daytime theme is all about tropical relaxation, whether this is on the breeze-cooled sandy cove or by the sheltered swimming pool, although there is a floodlit tennis court, fitness room, snooker table and non-motorised water sports available for those wishing to expend a little more energy. Equally sublime are the dining arrangements
which begin with cooked-to-order breakfasts on guests’ private terraces or balconies and are followed by à la carte lunches in the rustic beach bar. Rounding the days off to perfection, however, are the candlelit dinners of the vine-draped Rhodes Restaurant, Executive Chef David Marshall working with visiting celebrity chef Gary Rhodes to create gourmet cuisine that makes the most of local produce, seafood and spices.
