Lonestar - Barbados

This pocket-sized hotel has garnered a fashionable following since opening in 1998. First there is its setting; so close to the Caribbean Sea that the ocean views are all that’s required for entertainment. Then there’s its trendy boardwalk-style restaurant, with its eclectic blend of seafood dishes and international favourites. And finally there is the fact that it has just four rooms and a beach house, which endows it with the air of a European-style pension where you get to know the staff and they get to know you with reassuring swiftness. Of course, there’s plenty a hotel of this size can’t have on-site, but a host of water sports are just a brief walk down the beach and tennis and golf can easily be arranged.

7 nights from £2,235 p.p. high-season & £1,510 p.p. low-season, including breakfast.

The on-site restaurant features highly-rated ‘new Jamaican cuisine’, whilst the weekend afternoon teas and Sunday brunches are very popular with local visitors. Ottley’s Plantation Inn - St. Kitts

Ottley’s Plantation is what St. Kitts is all about. Beginning life as a 17th-century sugar plantation, it has now been lovingly converted into one of the grandest inns in the Caribbean. And whilst many people find everything they need right on the premises – a swimming pool, spa, tennis court, croquet lawn, nature walks and panoramic ocean views – a daily shuttle service takes 15-minutes to transport guests to the beach or into town. Accommodation is provided by just 24 air-conditioned guest rooms situated either in the main house or in cottages nestled within the gardens. Pamela Yahn supervises the new island-style cuisine of the acclaimed Royal Palm restaurant, with lunches more casual affairs, often taken around the pool.

7 nights from £1,440 p.p. high-season & £1,115 p.p. low- season, on a no-meals basis.

Rawlin's Plantation - St. Kitts

One of the Caribbean’s finest country house hotels, Rawlin’s Plantation owes its appeal to a variety of factors. First, there is its cuisine, a creative mélange of West Indian and Cordon Bleu that owes its success to owner, Claire Rawson. Then there is its English ‘country house’ ambience, achieved by 12-acres of gardens, an antique-filled Great House and ten cottage-style rooms. And finally, there is its tranquil setting, 350-feet high on the slopes of Mount Liamuiga. A spring-fed swimming pool, grass tennis court and croquet lawn are right on-site, with the finest beaches and an 18-hole golf course a 40-minute drive away. Car hire is recommended, yet why would anyone want to leave for too long?

7 nights from £1,535 p.p. high-season & £1,190 p.p. low-season, on a room only basis.
