The Bahamas mean different things to different people - quite understandable when you discover the chain consists of more than seven hundred islands scattered across 100,000 square-miles of Atlantic Ocean. And whilst the swaying palms, curving beaches and turquoise waters are everywhere you look, if you’re really seeking a laid-back lifestyle and only the occasional footprint in the sand, don’t spend all your time in Nassau or Paradise Island but combine these faster-paced glamorous islands with ‘Out Islands’ like Andros, The Exumas or The Abacos.
These are real naturalists wonderlands, their deserted coral sand beaches enhanced by crystal clear waters offering some of the best snorkelling, bone fishing and deep-sea fishing anywhere in the world. The Exumas actually consist of no less than 365 different cays and islets, whilst Andros is the largest but least explored island in the entire archipelago. It’s also flanked by the second largest reef in the Northern Hemisphere and should be top of your list if you’re a keen scuba-diver.
To really get the most out of your visit to The Bahamas, however, why not consider combining different islands with each other? Convenient flight schedules make the idea of ‘shopping’ stopovers in New York or Miami also well worth considering. But take account of the winter temperatures here – days often reach no higher than the early 70s and evenings can drop to around 60 degrees.
