AMANJENA
MARRAKECH, MOROCCO

Amanjena is a perfect example of the ‘place-sensitive’ minimalism that Amanresorts introduced to Asia two decades ago and are now disseminating throughout the world’s most fashionable places. Yet whilst this rose-toned Marrakech version has been duly inspired by its romantic setting, it’s probably best for those who feel happier with a slight distance between themselves and all the stridency, exoticism and authenticity of the medina itself.

Indeed this 8-year-old urban resort stands on the edge of an 27-hole golf course about 15-minutes’ drive from the city’s souks and carnival-esque market. But as its architectural design reflects ancient Berber houses and its immaculate lawns resemble the city’s 12th century Menara Gardens, you’ll never have any difficulty remembering where you are. Outside water is everywhere you look, from the huge bassin at its heart to the narrow canals that feed the citrus trees and date palms. Inside it offers rather a contemporary slant on traditional Moroccan themes, yet the elegant archways, cosy fireplaces, scalloped fountains and brass lanterns are all still there.

Accommodation is provided by just 39 dome-topped pavilions and maisons, each one designed for private seduction complete with arched fireplaces, garden courtyards and sensual bathrooms with deep-soaking tubs. Their calming tones are set off by flashes of red; some also boasting their own heated pools, others second bedrooms and butler service. The three restaurants offer anything from authentic Thai cuisine and Morrocan specialities to Continental dishes; the gym, tennis courts, full-service spa, heated swimming pool and nearby golf courses all there when you want a change from the sightseeing and shopping.
